The Seagate EXOS series today represents a unified enterprise portfolio of hard drives designed for data centers and enterprise storage.
Models that were previously differentiated across multiple product lines are now part of a single consolidated EXOS series offering consistent performance, capacity, and reliability across a wide range of workloads.
Selected latest models (with capacities of 24TB and above) are built on the MOZAIC platform, which delivers higher areal density while maintaining efficient operation.
MOZAIC is Seagate’s cutting-edge technology platform that defines a new era of high-capacity storage systems. It is on this platform that the latest drives in the Seagate Exos that reach 24TB, 28TB, 30TB and 32TB capacities in a single 3.5″ drive.
MOZAIC platform integrates key innovations, led by HAMR technology, which enables data to be stored at much higher densities.

Most data centres will soon start to face a fairly modern problem – users are starting to generate more data than application servers can process and store in the long term; according to statistics, by 2024, users will produce 30 zettabytes of data, while data centres will generate about 2 zettabytes of new storage. However, with the advent of AI and the demand for unique training data, it doesn’t make sense to delete this information and therefore servers need to be prepared for this data.
Since data center space is limited, increasing the capacity of individual drives is highly advantageous. However, even this has its limits – but Mozaic takes these even further and is able to provide data densities in excess of 4TB per disk platter. Already, manufacturer Seagate claims that this technology can achieve capacities of up to 44TB per drive, while maintaining 10 platters. This makes high-capacity HDDs for datacenters more affordable, faster and more reliable than ever before, and can meet the modern demand for data and storage.
HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology is a key innovation that enables the MOZAIC platform to achieve unprecedented recording densities of 3TB per disk and beyond.
The MOZAIC platform transforms the way data bits are written by supporting HAMR technology. Not only does it bring you magnetic stability, but together with controlled thermal action, it allows you to store much more data on each disk with confidence and reliability.
To increase the capacity of hard drives, engineers must fit more data bits on the platters. However, with extreme densification, the bits are so close together that they begin to interact magnetically, leading to a loss of data stability. The only solution is to use innovative materials for the plates. The Mozaic platform uses a special glass substrate on which layers of a unique platinum-alloy (FePt) with a superlattice structure are deposited. This combination creates a medium that is magnetically and thermally extremely stable.
At the heart of this process is the Plasmonic Writer, which is the technological heart of the entire HAMR system. This unique recording head with integrated nanolaser can heat the storage medium to over 400 degrees Celsius in a fraction of a nanosecond and then instantly cool it. The cycle is so fast that it does not affect the temperature of the drive or its reliability and stability. Even during intensive testing, this process has not affected the life of the drive, making it a highly secure solution for critical data.
This breakthrough system consists of three key elements:
Plasmonic writerA key feature of this writing mechanism is its ability to precisely heat the superlattice structure of the platter above 400°C, which then cools in less than two nanoseconds.
Platinum-alloy mediaTo create a data storage layer with higher magnetic coercivity, Seagate has developed a special iron-platinum structure in which the position of each atom plays an important role.
Spintronic readerThe Gen 8 spintronic reader detects subtle changes in magnetization and enables very accurate and fast data reading even at ultra-high areal densities of the recording media.
7nm controllerDesigned for data mobility and data integrity, the 7nm integrated controller meets the growing data demands of digital media, enterprise software and cloud systems.
