Rack-mounted Exos AP application storage is a great choice for developing and running demanding applications, databases and other processes requiring large data capacity and fast transfer. Exos AP can also serve as a compute unit as it can be equipped with AMD EPYC server processors. The Exos AP 5U84 AP solution is also highly scalable and relies on a very good TCO for the customer.
JBOD (Just Bunch Of Disks) storage is a type of network storage that combines many disks under one volume that can be easily expanded. The Exos E 4U106 platform is a great foundation for such solutions as it offers good scalability and is very versatile for any application.
The Seagate Mozaic 3+ architecture, first used on the new Exos datacenter drives, brings key innovations to the hard drive market.
New concept of how to write data to a magnetic plate and then read it works with innovative technology HAMRwhich allows data to be stored at a much higher density.
Drives based on this architecture have significantly higher data density, as their magnetic platters are able to store up to 3 times more data on the same surface thanks to a special structure. Of course, other components have also been modified to maximise the drive’s potential. That’s why Mozaic drives use a unique write and read method, have improved read heads and are driven by a new controller with only 12nm lithography for improved efficiency.
HAMR stands for “Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording”, or heat assisted magnetic recording.
This technology from Seagate completely changes the basic principles of storing and reading data on hard drives, as it now uses a laser diode to heat the magnetic platter of the disk and then precisely reverse the polarity of one bit in a block instead of the conventional electromagnetic head found in conventional hard drives.
The surface of the magnetic platter is heated and cooled within nanoseconds, and even in long-term testing, this process did not affect the life of the disk. When you factor in that with this technology we are now able to store up to 3TB of data on a single platter, we are able to make drives with density and speed that can fundamentally improve the performance of arrays used for corporate data, performance or AI training.
Platinum gridTo create a data storage layer with higher magnetic coercivity, Seagate has developed a special iron-platinum structure in which the location of each atom plays an important role.
Plazmonic writerA key feature of this writing mechanism is its ability to precisely heat the grid structure of the plate above 400°c, which then cools in less than two nanoseconds.
Spintronic readerThe Gen 7 spintronic reader detects subtle changes in magnetization and provides very accurate and fast data reading at ultra-high areal densities of the lattice structure.
12nm controllerDesigned for data mobility and data integrity, the 12nm integrated controller meets the growing data demands of digital media, enterprise software and cloud systems.
Most data centres will soon start to face a fairly modern problem – users are starting to generate more data than application servers can process and store in the long term; according to statistics, by 2024, users will produce 30 zettabytes of data, while data centres will generate about 2 zettabytes of new storage. However, with the advent of AI and the demand for unique training data, it doesn’t make sense to delete this information and therefore servers need to be prepared for this data.
Since datacenter space is relatively limited, it is therefore very advantageous to increase the data capacity of the disks themselves. However, even this has its limits – but Mozaic 3+ takes these even further and is able to provide data densities of up to 3 TB per disk platter. This makes high-capacity HDDs for data centres more affordable, faster and more reliable than ever before, and can meet the modern demand for data and storage.
Seagate currently has five different drives in its Exos series, which is targeted for server deployments.
Some of the models have very unique features, for example the Seagate Exos 2X18 brings the innovation of dual read heads, effectively doubling speed, increasing random IOPS and improving sequential read/write performance.
