The main idea of the challenge was to cycle to and from work as regularly as possible during May – the alternatives were walking, running or even scootering. It was an annual nationwide challenge where participants recorded their journeys in the registration system, giving them the opportunity to compare themselves with other participants from all over the Czech Republic every day.
The aim of the challenge was not to perform sports, but to find out that regular active movement has unexpectedly many benefits and more! Thanks to the anonymised data on the routes of thousands of people uploaded by Automat, the project organiser, cities can build cycling and walking infrastructure where it is needed and improve problematic areas.
More than 25,600 participants from all over the Czech Republic applied for this year’s May challenge. They formed teams of 2 to 5 people, but individuals could also apply.
